Blog #19: Food Memoir, Poster & Video

  1. Noah,
I really enjoyed your narrative of the peppermint patty brownies (not to mention, they were quite delicious). I was touched by your sweet story about you and your connection to your brother and you did a good job demonstrating that as you spoke about baking with your mother and visualizing your brother walking through the door. I liked the ending especially, as you brought it full circle to discuss your own departure for college. You clearly demonstrated how you yourself had grown up in the way your brother had, therefore narrating your own bildungsroman. I really enjoyed your video (and the brownies).
In the fishbowl discussion, I thought you brought up a good point about death being a catalyst for Janie's self-actualization. I had never thought about the significance of Janie visiting Joe on his death bed other than truly showing their resentment of each other until you mentioned her own impending death and how that motivated her to live life to the fullest. Good job!

  2. Noah, great job on your food memoir and fishbowl discussion!
Firstly, I thought your food story was very touching and certainly relatable as a high school senior who has a limited number of home cooked meals left before he goes off to college. I think your story really connects with the communion idea of Thomas C. Foster. In your story, the peppermint patty brownies were more than just a food, they were very much a part of your social growth.
One aspect of your fishbowl discussion I thought was interesting was when you synthesized the poem "Hawk Roosting". You brought up that change is not always a necessary development in life and that eventually there may come a time where change should be avoided. I think this idea is very applicable to today where change and progress seem to be the mantras of society.

  3. Hello,
As an only child who could not truly relate to the connection between you and your siblings, I was touched and could feel the strong relationship you all have. And, this was brought out extremely well through your food memoir and how the making of the peppermint patty brownies reminded you of your older brother. Also, during the fish bowl discussion, I thought deeper about the significance of Joe's death and how his death was a catalyst for Janie's self-actualization journey. Great job overall!

  4. Noah,
I really liked your food memoir! I thought that the way that you started and ended it worked really well, with your brother going to college and finally you going to college. It was sweet and personal. Plus, the brownies were super good!! During the fishbowl I thought that your point about death being a cause for self-actualization was interesting. I also thought that the poems that you chose to synthesize/talk about were really helpful to your point. Overall, good job!

  5. Hi Noah!

For your food memoir, I thought that it was really amazing story regarding the brownies, and as the brother of a 6 year old, I can empathize with the feeling of longing as I scrap for time to play with her. I thought that the description of the events was truly touching, especially the scene where you imagined your brother walking in to the smell of sweets. The imagery was very compelling and I really did feel that sense of warmth during a cold winter. Regarding the discussion, I thought that your point regarding change was very insightful and you backed it up with the Hawk Roosting poem. There is not always a need for change, and I think the connection you made with TEWWG was fantastic. Great work!
